Outpourings: Praise & Remember

Sometimes, there are moments when my tongue gets tied.  Simple as that.

No words come to mind.  No train of thought exists.  Just quiet.  Void.  Stillness.  And a complete lack of ability to speak.

In moments like these during my quiet time, my first reaction is to try again later.  "Well," I think, "I must just need to be in a "better place" to talk to God, and since I'm not, I guess I'll give it a try some other time."

There is no better time to worship God than in these moments.

In these moments, we are reminded of our humanity.  We see living proof that sometimes, words and thoughts fail.  We see that there is no better example of perfection, articulation, and guidance than God, Himself.  And He meets us there, on our behalf, regardless of our struggle for words.

So much truth about God's character arises from this situation, and I believe this is the type of moment that warrants one of two (or both!) reactions:

ONE: Praise.  When words fail--when requests, intercession, and confession cannot find words--praise God.  Worship Him.  For God is One who never, ever changes or alters.  Psalm 92 says, "It is good to praise the Lord and make music to your name, O Most High..."  We can never go wrong choosing to praise the Lord.

TWO: Remember.  When words fail in the present, recall the past.  Think upon how God showed His faithfulness throughout your life.  He will surely show His faithfulness even now!  Psalm 68 says, "When you went out before your people, O God...the earth shook, the heavens poured down rain."  Remember God's character, His works, and His intentionality.

When words fail, know that God draws near to you nevertheless.  He longs to spend time resting with you, getting to know you better, and leading you into His presence.  His presence never fails!

Has this ever happened to you?  What do you do when words fail?
