Identity Embrace: Vine & Branches

Have you ever felt overwhelmed?

Overwhelmed only describes in part what I have been feeling this past week. Sometimes, I want to scream, "Too much! Stop the world--I want to get off!"

Sound familiar?

These are the moments when an unwelcome tension arises: We desperately need to spend time with our Savior, yet there does not seem enough time in the day. Our focus, peace, and security rely on resting in the Father's sweet presence...yet we cannot seem to muster up the energy or mental focus to actually make it possible.

Although I certainly do not have all the answers regarding solving this tension, one thing I do know: If I am to function well, stay focused on the Kingdom's perspective, and glorify God throughout my day, I must set aside time to be with Him. Apart from Him I can do nothing.

Today's identity embrace: God is the true vine; you are the branches (John 15). We can do nothing apart from Him.

Admitting that we are weak, needy, and of limited resources truly does not make us defeated--it makes us strong, of right mind, and dependent on our purposeful Provider. It empowers us to get outside ourselves and to recognize a different source of strength and energy: God's!

If you feel overwhelmed today, if life and its demands feel too burdensome for you, then run to the One whose strength overflows. Here are some promises to dwell on when feeling defeated:

"...For the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you, nor forsake you." Deuteronomy 31:6

"But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,  I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:13-14

'"But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me." 2 Corinthians 12:9

"Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:29-30

Your strength depends upon His because you are His! Rely on His promises, and rest in His embrace.

What do you do when you're overwhelmed? What promise of God comes to mind?

  1. "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33

This is one of my favorite verses, period. It doesn't promise instant solutions have me looking for an easy out. Instead, it reminds me of the truth we have to hold on to when everything around us is spinning out of control: that "he himself is our peace" (Eph. 2:14) and the true battle has already been won.

    1. Emily, I absolutely adore this verse. It holds so much POWER! I love your statement "the true battle has already been won". We already know who we are--we have nothing to prove! God has overcome for us. What LOVE! Thank you for commenting!
