Beautiful Lady, Beautiful Ministry: An Interview with Concepta

If you were to ask Concepta Jones for some encouragement, you can rest assured this woman of faith would empower you.  The founder of "I Am! I Can!", a ministry for young ladies emphasizing the power of positive self-image and identity, Concepta has a host of encouragement to share with anyone willing to listen to her story.  She kindly offered up her heart to The Identity Project, answering some questions about her faith, her struggles, and her personal identity as a daughter of God.

What passage or verse in Scripture is currently influencing your walk with the Lord?

My favorite is Phil 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”, but I think currently I'm standing on Isaiah 54:17, “No weapons formed against me shall prosper and every tongue that rises up against me shall be proven wrong..."  We all go through our struggles and battles from time to time and right now I'm in battle but I know who is fighting for me. “If God is for me, who can be against me?”

Have you struggled with your personal identity?  How has God affirmed that you are His?

:) Yes, oh yes....I've had my struggles. I think when we're younger, we all kinda go through our “identity struggle”. Even though I pretty much had an idea of my gifts, talents, etc but I wasn't 100% clear of my vision. So, of course I explored and when one explores, there are various paths, opportunities that arise which of course leads to decisions. Some healthy and some not so healthy lol. I made some decisions on both my personal life and professional which put me in positions I didn't feel comfortable. Positions that made me question who, what or why I am. Positions I felt comprised my core values.

Through all that the Holy Spirit kept nudging me with visions of what and how my life should be and with complete surrender and prayer, I found the strength to remove myself from those toxic situations and back onto the path the Lord has for me. He affirmed I am His by delivering me from a toxic relationship and opening doors to fulfill my vision and purpose.

You have a coaching ministry centered on the phrase "I am!  I can!"  Tell us about your desire to coach young girls into a positive self-image.

I Am! I Can! came about during one of my struggles a few years ago. “I Am a beautiful creation in Christ and I Can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”.  Yes, it's based on Phil 4:13 :)
Coming out of a toxic relationship birthed a ministry for young girls. I see everyday how our girls are being so negatively misled as I was. What I've learned is that in order for me to truly love myself I had to find myself again in Christ and this is what I want to share with our girls. With my story and healing process, I want to inspire, encourage and coach our girls to embrace and own their identities in Christ.

Complete the phrases:  Jesus is my ALL! My Creator, my Father, my Lord, Savior, my Provider, my Defender, my Coach.  I am God's masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which He prepared in advance for me to do.

Concepta (a name which is reference to the Virgin Mary and the Immaculate Conception) was born in Cape Town and raised in Durban, South Africa.  Like lots of young girls, Concepta dreamed of becoming a "Pop Star" but with numerous opportunities and experiences throughout her career, she didn't feel comfortable with the industry's direction for her sound or image. The industry's definition of  "success" didn't quite line up with Concepta's values and beliefs. "I don't believe I need to present a sexual image to be considered beautiful. Nor do I need to sing about sex or use profanity to have a 'powerful' song. I'm not perfect and I don't judge others but I prefer being true to myself about who I am", says Concepta.

Through "I Am! I Can!" Concepta coaches young girls, sharing her personal story and experiences as that girl who was once negatively influenced.  She aims to help build their self confidence & self image.  To love and respect themselves and not be defined by their surroundings or situations.  To know and embrace their identity in Christ (courtesy of website).

Visit Concepta's website, find her on Facebook, and follow her on Twitter @iconcepta.  She is available for speaking engagements and works as a Life Coach.

Thank you, Concepta, for interviewing with The Identity Project and for empowering us to live in the identity of our Creator...I Am! I Can!
