A "Dashing" Interview with Katie Farrell

Katie Farrell may be a wife, daughter, sister, friend and the creator of Dashing Dish, but her favorite all-around title is "Daughter of God".  This girl is amazing in so many ways, yet so very humble at heart.  I had the pleasure of interviewing her about her website, her call to ministry, and the ways God has impacted her identity.

Katie Farrell of Dashing Dish

What passage or verse in Scripture is currently influencing your walk with the Lord?

Isaiah 61:3 is the verse that is influencing my walk with the Lord at the present time. The verse says, “To those who mourn, He will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, a garment of praise instead of despair.”

This scripture describes how God has transformed my life in such an amazing way. Not only did He take the broken places of my life, and give me wholeness...But He is now taking what was considered the ‘ashes’ of my life and turning it into ‘beauty’ as He is opening doors for me to help others!

There is no greater description of ‘beauty for ashes’ when we are able to use our testimony to point others to freedom, peace, and the joy that can only be found in Him.

Have you struggled with your personal identity?  How has God affirmed that you are His?

Yes, I have struggled with my personal identity for most of my life. The biggest problem that I had (up until a few years ago), was defining who I was according to who the world said I was. Whether it was by my occupation, my relationship status, my age, my height, my weight, you name it, that was how I defined myself.

It wasn’t until I started to learn that my identity is in Christ alone that I started to have a realization of who I am in Him. He showed me these truths in His Word. I took each scripture, (such as, “You are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus”~2 Corinth. 5:21), as His personal love letter to me! It didn’t take long before I had a true revelation of my identity in Him.

Dashing Dish seems to have quite the following!  Tell us how community has impacted your spiritual walk, as well as your work.

Dashing Dish has changed my life in more ways than I could have imagined! I recently wrote a blog post called, “Life changing decisions” based on the decision that I made to leave my full time nursing job to pursue the ministry and business that God has been birthing in my heart for the past few years through Dashing Dish. Here is a snippet from that post that explains my journey in making this life changing transition...

“Around the same time that I graduated nursing school, and started my first nursing job, I also started Dashing Dish. I started this website with the thought that it was simply going to be a fun hobby. However, despite all my plans, I soon began to realize that that God had something different for my life than what I had in mind.  About six months after starting Dashing Dish, I started receiving hundreds of e-mails from women of all ages, from all around the world. Whether it was about losing unwanted weight or finding freedom in the areas of eating disorders, each woman had their own story.

I started to realize the great responsibility that God had given me with this website and that it was meant to share much more than recipes. I felt the Lord prompting me to share about the freedom and joy that can only be found in Him and to teach women how to find their true beauty in exchange for the ashes of their life.   I spent many months thinking over my decision, talking to my husband, my parents, and many Godly mentors that I respect. God used every single person to confirm that this was beyond a shadow of a doubt God’s call on my life.

The Lord also led me to Ezekiel 34 where He used this passage of scripture to tell me that there are sheep in need of a Shepard.  I realized that by trying to ‘figure’ out my own future, I was ultimately caring for myself instead of His flock. It was then that I knew it was time to leave the ‘security’ of my nursing job and to jump full time into the business and ministry that He was calling me to.

In August [2011] I decided to step out in obedience. I had made the decision to listen to God...To care for others before myself. It was one of the hardest decisions I had ever made. It didn’t make sense to my head, and it certainly felt like I was ‘stepping out of the boat’. It’s funny how when we step out in faith, God never let’s us sink, (as long as we keep our eyes on Him).

On the day that I left my nursing job, God led me to the passage of scripture in 2 Timothy 4:5-6. It reads, “But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don't be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at bringing others to Christ. Complete the ministry God has given you. As for me, my life has already been poured out as an offering to God.

I knew that by making this decision, that I had taken the first step in ‘completing’ the ministry that God has called me to. I made the decision to pour out my life as an offering to God, and how could I not after Jesus gave His life for me!?!

During the ‘transitional’ phase of switching over to Dashing Dish full time, God began to flood my mind with ideas and ways that I could minister to people. Little did I know that God was about to lead me to a project that was far beyond myself. Something that I could have never dreamed up or accomplished on my own....And, it has been almost 9 months exactly in the making. (How cool is God!?!)

I have spent the last 9 months developing meal plans, new content, health coaching services, devotionals, and workout routines (and in the future~ a bible study series), that will all be featured on my new Dashing Dish website! I'm so excited to share all the new features that have been added and to share what God has put on my heart with all of you!  As far as the future goes, I can honestly say that I’m not exactly sure where God is going to take me. I have ideas such as Bible college, pursuing a degree in nutrition, of course publishing my cookbook. However, despite all my plans, I have found that His timing is best so I plan to follow His leading!”

Complete the phrases:  Jesus is __________.  I am ___________.

Jesus is my everything... He is my savior, my best friend, my healer, my confidant, my leader, my guide, my restorer, my light, my provider, my redeemer, my king, my master, my truth, my daddy.

I am His child, His friend, His servant, His beloved, and the one I love the most... I am His daughter!
